What we’re about
About the 3Rs-Tours:
Experiential learning sponsored by the San Diego Council Of Divers.
What are Rocks, Rips, & Reefs Tours (a.k.a. 3Rs-Tours)?
The 3Rs is an education and safety program for S.C.U.B.A. divers and experienced snorkelers and swimmers, surfers, and other water people. Participants explore various dive sites along the San Diego coast, in order to get a better understanding of the underwater features and how they are affected by tides and surf conditions.
Based in La Jolla, CA, the 3Rs program includes EIGHT in-water tours per summer: each site is led by experienced instructors, so participants can safely experience first-hand how to enter and exit these particular areas. The swimmers learn how to recognize local hazards, and how to handle themselves in emergency situations. The events are adventurous and a fun opportunity to learn about various dive sites. Most importantly, the experience will help you be a better and safer diver, no matter where you go.

Now RECRUITING Safety-Swimmers for the 2024 Season: this event is for SAFETY SWIMMERS ONLY!
It's summer again! Time to recruit another set of RED-SHIRTS to replace the ones lost last year*. This is for experienced ocean swimmers only. You must be willing and able to help make water rescues in heavy surf conditions, communicate with emergency first response systems, and support 3Rs-Instructors with all aspects of this program.
Each year since at least 1976, the San Diego Council of Divers has held a series of safety courses off the coast of La Jolla. The 3Rs-Tours: RIPs, Rocks, & Reefs are designed to teach new divers, swimmers, & surfers how to enter and leave the surf zone safely. The courses are taught by lifeguards and strong waterwomen, who care about this environment and our public access to the coast.
Building on our great 2023 season, we need volunteer safety swimmers, lifeguards, and/or instructors who wish to help lead these groups. We are thus recruiting women and men of all backgrounds to come out and train with the San Diego Council of Divers for our new season.
Each VOLUNTEER SAFETY-SWIMMER must commit to attending at least 4 (FOUR) of the following SATURDAY events:
